Match reports Ken Doherty booked his place in the last eight after claiming an epic 13-12 victory over a stubborn Graeme Dott.
Doherty had been 2-7 down but after pulling back to 7-9 on Sunday night, he won the first four frames of the final session to lead 11-9 at the interval.
The game descended into a war of attrition but Dott dug in and won three of the next four frames to set up a dramatic finale.
Doherty then hung on in a 42-minute decider to claim an unconvincing win.
Afterwards, the former world champion admitted that the gruelling win had taken its toll.
"I'm absolutely shattered - it was a marathon and not pretty to watch but there was a lot of tension," he said of the nine-hour contest.
"You are never beaten, in the last frame you just need half a chance and anything can happen.
"I'm thrilled to win but hopefully I can play better - I will have to if I am going to win this tournament." Graeme Dott expressed his disappointment after the dramatic contest.
"When the score was 12-12, I thought I was the stronger player. If I got a chance in the final frame I would have won but I could not get in," he said.
"Going 6-2 up at the start can be deceiving as you are nowhere near the end and keeping a lead is hard.
"At a few points people thought I would be easily beaten so I think I've proved a lot of people wrong."

Ken Doherty survived a tremendous rally from Shaun Murphy to seal a dramatic 10-9 win in the first round.
The 1997 champion looked to be on course for a comfortable passage into the second round as he cruised into an 8-4 lead.
But when Murphy knocked in a century break in the 13th frame, it signalled a run of four frames to make the score 8-8.
The next two frames were shared, taking the match into a nail-biting decider, and it was Doherty who held his nerve to sink the final black for victory. "I would have been gutted if I had lost, but Shaun played so well and took on shots I would never have dreamed of," said Doherty.
"I stuck in there and managed to get a knee-trembling clearance at the end. There was so much pressure on it but it is fantastic to have come through it.
"This is the mother of all tournaments and it's what snooker is all about."
Murphy was gracious in defeat, saying: "I congratulate Ken because he played a huge part in what was, in my opinion, the match in the round.
"Good luck to him in his next match because he deserves to do well. I've been able to come back when the chips are down and I am proud of myself.
"When I have given 100%, even though I have lost, I can stand back and say what a fabulous match it was."
First round result: K Doherty (Ire) 10-9 S Murphy (Eng)

UK CHAMPIONSHIP 2002

Mark Williams claimed the UK Championship and the £84,000 first prize with a thrilling last-frame victory over Ken Doherty in a tense final at the Barbican.
The lead changed hands several times throughout, but neither player was more than a frame down until late on.
Williams made the decisive move to go 9-7 up with breaks of 74 and 78, but Doherty did not throw in the towel. He hit a 79 as he took the next two frames but a mistake in decider let Williams in for a 70 - and the title.
Mark Williams was jubilant after his title triumph ended his 26-month wait for a tournament win on home soil.
The Welshman, who collected his second UK success, said: "I've had a couple of poor seasons by my own standards and it's nice to win this event again.
"I'm over the moon. It was an excellent pressure break in the final frame.
"I felt good going into the decider as long as I got a chance. Ken got in first but when I got my opportunity I was lucky enough to take it."
Williams also thanked fellow Welshman Terry Griffiths.
The former world champion has been coached by Griffiths for the past two months.
"If it wasn't for him I wouldn't have won that final frame.
"I kept a clear head throughout and that was mostly down to Terry and the way that he has been helping me along.
"I took a chance and went to see him and my form has been 100% better since - I intend to keep working with him. "
Ken Doherty was left to rue what might have been after losing for the third time in the final of this tournament.
The Dubliner said: "I had a good chance in the last frame and that's what disappoints me. I just mis-judged a safety shot and that's what's cost me the match.
"It was a pulsating final, swaying to and fro. There was a lot of tension and pressure out there.
"It was a great match to play in - there was a great atmosphere - but it's just disappointing to lose."
Williams 10-9 Doherty (best of 19 frames):
68-41 (56), 8-78 (55), 86-0 (86), 28-87 (55), 66-68, 70-45, 65-9 (65), 76-63, 15-62, 43-69 (62), 29-65, 128-0 (119), 50-40, 1-79, 74-0 (74), 78-0 (78) 14-58, 0-79 (79), 91-35 (70) Ken Doherty marched into his second successive PowerHouse UK Championship final in York on Friday.
Watch Doherty clinch his place in the final

But battling Scot Drew Henry made the former world champion work hard for his 9-5 win in the opening semi-final of the £615,000 event.
Doherty, who will play world champion Peter Ebdon or 1999 UK title holder Mark Williams in Sunday's best of 19 frame final, resumed the session with a 6-2 lead.

However, world number 22 Henry, playing in only his third ranking event semi-final, took the first three frames in just 36 minutes.
Doherty, who arrived in York last week without a win to his name this season, scored only 29 points.
Glaswegian Henry made breaks of 62, 93 and 43 to reduce his arrears to 6-5. But his bid for his first major final stalled at that point.
Doherty used his vast big match experience to full use and reeled off the next three frames.
The 33-year-old Dubliner, who has twice been a runner-up, will now hope to atone for his appearance in last year's final when he lost 10-1 to Ronnie O'Sullivan.
"I'm hoping it will be third time lucky for me - and if I get more than one frame I'll have done 100% better than last year.

"I'll give it my all and hopefully take the cup back to Dublin this time."
Doherty was very satisfied with his performance against Henry.
"At the start I didn't do much wrong - but 20 minutes later he had won three in a row," he said.
"Then there were two crucial frames - the first to make it 7-5 on the pink after I had potted a tremendous blue - and then 8-5 took the pressure off."
Henry knew he was fighting an uphill struggle, but took some pride from the way he performed to clamber back into the match.
He said: "I'm really disappointed to lose at this stage but it was a case of going out and having a go.
"I started well in the evening but the damage was done in the afternoon.
"After that it was just a case of trying to stay in it. I didn't want to lose before the interval and that worked for a while but it wasn't good enough in the end."
Ken Doherty 9-6 John Higgins
Ken Doherty ended John Higgins' hold over him with a 9-6 victory to progress to the semi-finals.
Doherty, who had not beaten Higgins in a ranking tournament since 1997, began by rattling off a break of 110 on his way to taking the first four frames.
The Irishman cleared up in the second after Higgins missed a brown and notched up a 60 break on the way to winning the third.
Higgins won the fifth and then put in breaks of 83 and 62 to cut the deficit to 5-3 after the first session.
The Scot then took the first two frames of the second session to level the match.
He hit breaks of 118 and 113 in the first three evening frames and looked to be getting the upper hand.
But from 6-6, Doherty won three in a row to end Higgins' title bid.
Higgins admitted that Doherty deserved his first victory over him since the 1997 World Championship.
"He beat me on the way to winning it that year and he was better this time," said Higgins.
"That's the best he has ever played against me - he just kept on nicking the frames.
"It looked good for me when I got it back to 5-5 but he nicked frames after that and the big one was when he won the frame at 6-6."
High quality
Doherty savoured the end of John Higgins' winning run against him.
The Irishman said: "It's nice because he has given me a few hidings and it's good to return the compliment."
Doherty added: "I won three or four frames when I had been 40 or 50 points behind and those are clinchers - they can hurt an opponent.
"I played well and so did he. He was making big breaks and I thought I did very well to be 4-0 up but I knew I was playing well at that stage.
"He came out all guns blazing after that and I was lucky to hang onto his coat tails at 6-6.
"But I made good breaks too, including one in the last frame, and that's what you have got to do."

Frame-by-frame (Doherty first): 110-13 (110), 69-46, 75-1 (60), 66-61, 0-102 (68), 64-47 (64), 8-87 (83), 2-70 (62), 6-129 (113), 38-71 (68), 67-40, 1-118 (118), 61-58 (Higgins 50), 76-0 (63), 41-25

DOHERTY IS REGAL WELSH OPEN CHAMPION AGAINHunter overwhelmed by the Irishman
Dubliner Ken Doherty captured his fourth ranking event title when he defeated Paul Hunter 9-2.Doherty, who also won the event eight years ago, pocketed the first prize of £62,000 with Hunter, the 1998 Regal Welsh champion, receiving, £33,000.A runaway victory saw Doherty, the 1997 world champion, win the last seven frames. His highest breaks were a 125, 71, 69, 68 and 66 while Hunter, who fell away badly after losing the fifth frame on the black, failed to compile a single half century.“I’ve played well all week and it’s nice to get some consistency back into my play, that’s something which has been lacking in my game," said Doherty.“But my victory over Stephen Hendry in the quarter-finals did so much to improve my confidence and I was able to sustain it when I defeated Mark Williams in the semi-finals.“There is also no feeling like lifting a trophy. To reach finals and picking up ranking points is all very well, it’s winning titles that matters to me.”The Irishman who is engaged to psychologist Sarah Prasad and visited her parents in Australia before Christmas, added, ”She has helped me a great deal and must take all the credit for this victory.”Hunter who defeated John Higgins in the 1998 final said, “I’m not too disappointed as I’ve played super all week and all this is a learning curve for me. Ken wasn’t at his best but he played solid enough to beat me.”Both finalists won 6-3 in the semi-finals, Doherty against Mark Williams and Hunter against Stephen Lee.
